S.U. geriatric strength and conditioning program results

Senior University’s geriatric strength and conditioning program was a 10-week affair that began in late February, 2016. The purpose of the geriatric strength and conditioning program was to improve body mass index (BMI), to increase muscular strength and endurance, to improve aerobic capacity, to help develop an appreciation of physical activity, and to help expose participants to a variety of exercises. Senior participants followed the 10-week exercise program and determined results by comparing pre- and post-fitness tests. Participants tested individual fitness levels weekly to track progress, while following scaffolded workouts to ensure muscular and cardiorespiratory development, and avoid plateaus. All participants improved BMI, increased muscular strength and endurance, and improved aerobic capacity.
Following the completion of the geriatric strength and conditioning program, participants completed a post-survey. Responses were collected from 16 individuals, with the majority of participants being senior students or clients of Senior University and Dr. Robelyn Garcia. When compared to the amount of initial geriatric exercise surveys, the fewer number of post-survey responses collected can be most likely attributed to individuals ceasing to participate in Senior University or the strength and conditioning program, or forgetting to complete the survey. Post-survey responses indicated that all participants felt comfortable trying new exercises and activities, and that most participants were active for an hour or more, five or more days a week, in hopes of maintaining current level of health.
Perhaps the most significant change over the 10-week geriatric strength and conditioning program was the goal participants had for exercising. Initially, the majority of participants indicated that improving BMI and losing weight was the primary goal – while 10 weeks later, the main goal was to maintain current fitness level. The results of the completed Senior University strength and conditioning program indicated that following a 10-week period, all active participants improved BMI and overall fitness, all active participants felt more inclined to try new exercises, that most participants increased level of physical activity, and that the majority of participants find joy in exercising. Results are significant because determining the recipe for increasing level of physical activity and improving health and fitness in the geriatric population can mean the difference of a healthy, more fulfilling life; and a sedentary, dependent one.
